Apothecia sessile to constricted at the base, 0.4–1.0 mm diam.; disc dark red-brown to blackish brown, epruinose or slightly pruinose; margin concolorous with the thallus, thin, entire, ±verrucose to verruculose. Cortex hyaline, inspersed with small crystals, c. 20 µm thick laterally and 20–25 µm thick basally. Amphithecium with large crystals insoluble in KOH (pulicaris-type). Parathecium hyaline, 10–15 µm thick, with numerous small crystals soluble in KOH. Epihymenium red-brown, c. 10–15 µm thick, with numerous crystals (chlarotera-type); pigmentation rapidly soluble in KOH. Hymenium, subhymenium and hypothecium hyaline. Paraphyses sparingly branched and not to slightly thickened apically. Ascospores ellipsoidal to broadly ellipsoidal, 8.5–12.5 × 6.5–8.0 µm. CHEMISTRY: Thallus and apothecial margin K+ yellow, C–, Pd+ pale orange; containing atranorin (major), gangaleoidin (major), chloroatranorin (minor), 4-dechlorogangaleoidin (minor) and norgangaleoidin (minor). | ||
